Gastronomic Offer
The area of Caños de meca and Barbate are known worldwide for their wild bluefin tuna fishing through the artisanal style of the almadraba. The foodie in you will be unable to resist tasting this tuna in its thousand different versions!
Places where you should not miss:
El Campero (Barbate): named amongst one of the 100 best restaurants in Europe. It is without doubt the best place to try tuna in its most original interpretations. You can eat both in the restaurant and in the bar (where you can perhaps try more variety thanks to its wide range of tapas). A MUST without a doubt.
La Castilleria (Santa Lucía): for the real meat lover, the best meat of all Cádiz in a dreamy orchard. The dinners in this place are really romantic and their attention and detail to service, unbeatable. Perhaps the only problem is to book a table as they tend to be complete months in advance. A trick is to arrive early around 8:30 pm and you can take a table without problem, if you do not mind having dinner at this time, you must go to this incredible place, where the food is accompanied by an incredible garden and a waterfall that falls of the rear mountain.
El Alferez (El Palmar): eating in front of the sea is priceless, if you accompany it with an incredible rice of red prawns, tuna sashimi or a rock fish from the area. Great place for midday to rest from the beach, as well as for dinner with friends listening to the waves of the sea.
In Caños de Meca:
– El Caña: traditional food of the area, fresh daily fish and the best views of the whole area. This restaurant is located on top of a cliff on the central beach of Caños. Whether you choose to have lunch or dine there, it is an ideal place; where the landscape is the sea with the Trafalgar lighthouse in the background. A special place run by David. 10 minutes walk from home. Please note that they do not accept reservations, first come first serve basis.
– El Antojo, “la aceitera” area : Retina steakhouse with the Trafalgar lighthouse in the background. Good wine list. Superb dinners, ideal to go with children. Close to home. Run by Nicolás
In Vejer de la Frontera: if you go in summer time our advice is to go out of Caños with time to spare, it is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, getting lost in its streets is wonderful… have a wine in the flamenco pub and chat with the people of the area is a memory that you will never forget.
– The Oficina: one of my favorites, small locale with traditional cuisine but with a very special touch. It is not a luxury restaurant, but its owner and the food will make you feel like a king. You can eat the best tuna, a retinto meat or some garlic prawns …. the space is beautiful, full of charm. Its owner is an all-terrain artist. When he leaves the fires he dedicates himself to painting works of art that adorn the whole restaurant, works that you can acquire for very cheap prices and that you can take to your city as a reminder of this magnificent land. A MUST. They do not accept credit cards.
– The Califa: one of the most famous places in the area, Arabic fusion cuisine, Moroccan. Bbq and tajines, pastries and couscous … .. Something very special between the white alleys of Vejer. A must if you want to have a different experience. Ending a meal there with a mint tea is wonderful.
